The Sealy Center for Molecular Medicine (SCMM) is a newly transformed interdisciplinary research center at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. Our scientists are leading investigators in Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Internal Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology, Pediatrics, Neuroscience & Cell Biology. We are part of the newly formed Institute for Clinical and and Translational Research (ICTR).
The mission of the SCMM is to serve as a focal interface between clinical and basic scientists, addressing UTMB’s strategic plan for personalized medicine. Primary pursuits of the SCMM include the discovery and translation of the basic principles governing the signal transduction and the cellular stress response. In addition, the SCMM will focus on developing technologies for biomarker identification and molecular systems approaches for developing individualized treatments for human diseases.
The SCMM aims to develop research programs of an outstanding quality that can provide novel insight into cellular stress response characteristic of common diseases including asthma, aging, diabetes, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. To that end, goals and objectives are:
- To further develop outstanding research initiatives focused on stress response processes and its role in human disease.
- To provide the leadership and expertise necessary for the successful function of state of the art Cores in Molecular Science, Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics.
- To provide a unique academic perspective to the educational mission of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the various graduate programs associated with the SCMM Faculty.
- To participate in the UTMB-wide initiative to build seamless translational research networks that take advantage of the singular high quality of basic research present in SCMM.
